The best time to visit Georgia, month by month

Summer (June to August) is best for the high mountains, Svaneti and hiking; September and October bring the wine harvest in Kakheti and clear mountain views but are among the busiest months; spring is green and quiet; late autumn and winter suit Tbilisi, wine cellars and food. Tusheti’s road is usually open only June to October.

Georgia changes more by season than most trips allow for, because mountains, wine valleys and the coast each peak at a different time. This guide is written the way Rezo plans: start from what you want to see, then pick the months that suit it.

At a glance

When What it is like
Winter (Dec–Feb) Snow in the mountains, skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani. Cities, wine cellars and food at their cosiest. High roads can close after snowfall; Tusheti is cut off until summer.
Early spring (Mar–Apr) The lowlands turn green and orchards blossom. Tbilisi, Kakheti and the west are pleasant; the high mountains are still under snow.
Late spring (May–Jun) Green, fresh and mostly uncrowded. Good for nearly everything. The Tusheti road usually opens in June.
Summer (Jul–Aug) The best time for high mountains, Svaneti and hiking. Tbilisi and the lowlands get hot, and the coast is at its busiest.
Autumn (Sep–Oct) Harvest time in Kakheti and clear mountain views. One of the most popular seasons. Tusheti’s road usually closes during October.
Late autumn (Nov) Quiet and good value. Lovely for Tbilisi, wine and food. Mountain weather turns and some high roads close.

If you want the mountains

Go in summer. Svaneti, Kazbegi and Tusheti are at their most accessible and walkable. Tusheti in particular is usually open only from June to October, snow permitting, so a Tusheti day is the first thing Rezo checks against your dates. Read how the mountain roads behave.

If you want wine

September and October are harvest time (rtveli) in Kakheti, when the region is at its most atmospheric and also its busiest. Spring and late autumn are quieter for tastings and long lunches. The wine guide explains what you are tasting.

If you want the sea

The Black Sea coast around Batumi is subtropical, warm and often rainy, and busiest in summer. Many travellers end a mountain trip there for a night or two rather than building a beach holiday around it.

If you want cities and food

Tbilisi and the west work in almost any month. Late autumn and winter are quiet, and a long table is always available.

How crowds affect the plan

September and October are among the busiest months, so ask early. If you are flexible, May, June and late October are quieter and still beautiful. Rezo can tell you what is realistic for your dates when you design your trip.

Quick answers

What is the best month to visit Georgia?

There is no single best month. For high mountains and hiking choose June to August; for the wine harvest and clear mountain views choose September or October; for quiet and good value choose May, June or late October.

Is Georgia worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for different reasons: snow in the mountains and skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani, and cities, wine cellars and food at their cosiest. High roads can close after snowfall and Tusheti is cut off until summer.
