The road follows the Enguri gorge from Zugdidi up to Mestia, the heart of Upper Svaneti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its medieval defensive towers. Further on, Ushguli sits at about 2,100 m beneath Shkhara, the highest peak in Georgia.
Mestia as a base
Mestia, at about 1,500 m, is where most visitors stay. The towers rising above the roofs are the signature sight, and the surrounding valleys offer walks of every length. Ushba (4,710 m) is the mountain to look for on the skyline.
Ushguli
Ushguli is a day trip from Mestia on a mountain road. It is a cluster of high villages and stone towers beneath Shkhara. The road is demanding, so the vehicle is chosen for the conditions that day (see our 4×4 vehicle).
Getting here
Mestia is about 225 km and 4½ hours from Kutaisi via Zugdidi, and about 260 km and five hours from Mestia onward to Batumi. That makes Svaneti the natural high point of a west-Georgia route: mountains first, then the sea.
Season
Summer is the best time for Svaneti, Georgia’s high mountains and hiking. In winter, snow shapes what is possible on the mountain roads. The seasons guide has month-by-month notes, and the mountain roads guide covers how Rezo plans around conditions.
